Celebrating our volunteers: Cathy

In celebration of the new volunteers that have joined NVC Matters UK this year, we are hoping to feature a little about one volunteer at a time. We start with Cathy.

What brought you towards NVC?

I am an Alexander Technique teacher and came to NVC through meeting my partner who practiced it. I noticed the way he talked and thought that it brought such immediate connection, I was seen and heard. It worked really well for our relationship, and we are now 6 years together. I was naturally interested in the method, read the book and went from there.

Current practice

I have a trauma healing perspective where I use journalling, self-connection and self-compassion to help with a shift to connect to others. I believe it is hard to see others if I am troubled inside. I want to keep practicing seeing their needs better and quicker. Connecting to others has been and occasionally still is a big challenge to me.

About the language of NVC, I find that I don’t really use the classical formulas and nuances, my first language being Estonian. The way it works for me is through shifting internally, looking for the non-verbal essence, which then softens my relationships. I don’t want it to be artificial, trusting I will find the right words.

What made you want to volunteer?

I was looking for community and belonging at the time the Newsletter with volunteering options popped to my mailbox. These are my needs guiding me back to Estonia this winter, so volunteering is also a way to stay connected with the UK community. I am also intrigued about the use of Holacracy. I enjoy the thought of learning and growing within the NVC Matters community, as well as contributing with my skills and understanding.

How was the induction process for you?

I found it welcoming, informative and useful. I was given a lot of time. I felt how everyone’s heart was in the process.

What role do you hold within NVC Matters UK?

I hold the shopkeeper role and through this I support with structure and efficiency, including spreadsheet work. The main focus is the feelings and needs cards. I hope to include them in my platform where I am able to give them some visibility. (www.bodymindintegrity.com).

Is there anything else you would like to share?

Just how NVC really has changed my life. It contributes to my wellbeing immensely and I keep gravitating towards deepening my practice. I have enjoyed meeting some of the people here already, and I look forward to being more involved.

Note: thank you to another of our new volunteers: Jess Woolrich for interviewing Cathy and creating this piece.
