Learn NVC utilising the Awareness of your Body and Wisdom of your Nervous System
Being in (close) connection with other people where we give and receive out of the joy of doing so, is challenging and sometimes it can feel impossible. How to navigate relationships with other people is something that is essential to our well-being and we are expected to just know how to do this. But there are many complex skills involved and often we have not had the role-models or support that we needed to develop these skills. This can lead to disruptions in relationships, feeling lonely and a number of mental and physical health problems. The good news is that we can learn the skills that help us foster connection with ourselves and others. And what’s involved is easy to understand – even if not easy to implement in every moment.
We are Kirstin Heidler and Svetlana Stoyanova and we are passionate about teaching Nonviolent Communication in a way that integrates the nervous system and our body. We believe that NVC is not just something that we do in our language, but something that we do with our whole body. Many of us have gone through experiences that overwhelmed us at the time. At times, our once protective adaptations can seem so strong that they apparently run our life. With resonance and attention to our bodies those patterns can heal – as both our stories illustrate.
Kirstin went through intense experiences of loneliness and rejection in particular during her teenage years. When she was 15 she began her quest for finding out what treasure might lie in her emotions and how to have deep and meaningful relationships. Her determination and belief that this deep connection is possbile, have taken her on a meandering journey of personal development and spritual growth.
While growing up, Svetlana went through a lot of abuse and for some years attempted to cope through addictions. But she found 12-step programs, recovery and finally NVC and body awareness which are helping her to unfold more and more into opennness and experience the richness of life.
When Svetlana met Kirstin she knew there was something that Kirstin had, that she wanted as well. And so our journey began of developing a friendship with a lot of emotional intimacy that has been transformative and healing for both of us.
Nonviolent Communication is a way of acting, thinking and being described by Marshall Rosenberg that is aimed at “making natural giving possible”. We are educated to forget some of the most basic ways of being with other people that bring peace, joy and deep connection. NVC is wanting to remind us of how to be our natural, joyful and peaceful selves that are happy to be in connection with others. NVC focuses on needs as a way of connecting back to the humanity of everyone and to find a way of acceptance and mourning in the face of what is. Although, Marshall did not actively teach how to do this in our bodies (he embodied it but his teaching was mostly focussed on the mind and our language), we believe the body is essential and a valid path into understanding how to practice NVC.
