Nonviolent communication is an awareness practice. It is a way of communicating mindfully; supporting us in connecting authentically with other human beings in everyday situations, even when it’s challenging.

This 6 session online, in-person course is for anyone new to Nonviolent Communication or wanting to refresh the basics. Each session presents intellectual and experiential opportunities for using NVC in personal and professional situations

We cover the basic foundations of NVC created by Dr. Marshall Rosenberg. It is highly recommended that you read ‘A Language for Life’ along with your participation in this course.

During our time together we contemplate mindsets and learn about the NVC key distinctions. For example: the difference between an observation and evaluation, and needs and strategies.

We practice listening and expressing ourselves in ways that are supportive of honouring and respecting of our own needs as well as those of others.

You will be invited to share life situations, for the purpose of learning and practicing NVC. It is important that you take some time to consider which experiences you are open to sharing prior to joining.

The 6 course covers:

Week 1: The purpose of Nonviolent Communication

Understanding the intentions and application of Nonviolent Communication

Week 2: Empathy for others

Exploring what empathy is and what it isn’t

Week 3: Compassionate self connection

Hearing what the inner and outer critic wants to share.
Practicing self empathy and compassion.

Week 4 The 4 components of NVC – OFNR

Distinguishing what we think from the way we feel about situations;
Getting clear about what we need and value and why this matters to us;
Practicing making requests and exploring what happens and how to be hear No

Week 5: The 2 parts of NVC – Expressing honesty, receiving empathically

Consciously choosing the way we respond to situations that can be challenging
Differentiating between 3 modes of connection

Week 6: NVC dialogue practise – appreciation and gratitude

Practising NVC communication in dialogue with others

This is what some people share about the way NVC has enriched their lives

                • Intended outcomes of this course are to:
                • Cultivate deep listening skills
                • Relate to yourself and others with honestly and compassion
                • Have clarity about the motivations driving what you and others says or do
                • Feel more confident to have difficult conversations and to express disagreement
                • Staying safe, grounded and open when challenged
                • Work collaboratively with others

This is what participants have shared with me, following the course:

“I am so grateful for the opportunity in a session to work through a very traumatic conversation I had in my workplace which brought powerful revelation to me about myself and enabled me to connect with myself with compassion in a deeper way than I ever had done before. This has caused a seismic shift in the foundation of my identity resulting in more self-worth and self-compassion to enable me to connect deeper with empathy with those I love the most. Wow! I have been wanting to do an NVC course for a long time and this was the right time in my life when I was prepared and receptive to the incredible heart level healing it has brought me. As I continue on my NVC journey I am expectant and grateful for the increasing wholehearted connections that will flourish in my life, Lorraine, UK”

“The small group session was perfect to create a safe, open space to learn and practice NVC skills together. I have done various personal development training over the years, but for me NVC brings everything together clearly and as I apply these techniques, I can see the positive difference they make to me and others”  (Lyndsay McLean, UK)
